import duties in Namibia

Import Duty is a tax on goods, and services imported into Namibia. This article will explain how import duty works in Namibia and help you understand what you need to do with your tax return.

Import duties are charged on the value of goods being imported, so if you import a product that costs $100,000 into Namibia, then the customs department will charge 20% duty on its value – or $20k.

The Duty rate is usually expressed as a percentage of the CIF (Cost Insurance & Freight) value of an item. You can find this information on your invoice or packing slip (if it’s not printed on there then look at other documents sent to you by your supplier).

Import duty (only on c.i.f. value)

Import duty is levied on the c.i.f. value of your goods, which means it’s calculated by multiplying the c.i.f. value by a percentage rate.

Here’s an example: You have a shipment of furniture that you bought in South Africa and paid an import duty of 10% on its cost price (cif). That means you will pay R120 000 when you arrive in Namibia with this cargo—R100 000 for import duty (10% x R100 000) plus R20 000 for other costs related to receiving your shipments, such as dock dues and administration costs (this is known as “ad valorem duty”).

Import VAT (on the c.i.f. value plus the import duty)

Now that you know what import duty is, how much does it cost?

Import VAT (on the c.i.f. value plus the import duty)

If you’re importing goods into Namibia and your c.i.f. value is less than N$1 million, then your goods will be subject to an import VAT rate of 14%. If your c.i.f value is over N$1 million and up to N$5 million, then your goods are subject to an import VAT rate of 18%. Goods valued at more than N$5 million are taxed at a rate of 23%, so if this is likely to happen we’d recommend speaking with one of the experts here at [email protected]
