The world has a lot of coal, which is why it’s so much cheaper than other forms of energy. Coal isn’t just used for electricity generation, many people use it as an ingredient in the manufacturing of steel and cement. There are several types of coal, including anthracite, bituminous, sub-bituminous and lignite. But how much is one tonne?
To get an exact figure on how much coal that weighs you would have to know what type it is and where it comes from – there are different types with different densities. But we can give you an estimate for some common types:
Section:
The price of coal is determined by a variety of factors, including the quality of the coal and where it comes from.
For example, if you’re looking to buy a ton of low-quality hard-coking coal for use in your home or business, you could expect to pay around $115. This price is based on current market conditions and demand for this type of product in Namibia.
If you instead opt for high-quality metallurgical grade coal that’s intended for use in steelmaking plants, the going rate would be closer to $150 per ton—about 16% higher than low-quality hard coking. The reason behind this pricing difference is that metallurgical grade coal tends to be more expensive due to its quality; however it also has greater demand due to its ability to produce higher quality steel when used in manufacturing processes like blast furnace production (which makes steel).
