- A medical degree or doctorate. In order to become a plastic surgeon, you will need to complete at least 8 years of medical school and complete your residency in general surgery. Once this has been completed, you can begin your specialty training in plastic surgery.
- All specialties require board certification. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is the only organization that grants board certification for this specialty.
Expected Daily Tasks of Plastic Surgeons
There are a variety of daily tasks that a plastic surgeon would be responsible for, including:
- Performing surgeries. Plastic surgeons must have extensive knowledge of the human body and how to repair it when it is damaged. They perform surgeries to correct birth defects, injuries and deformities.
- Treating patients. In addition to performing operations, many plastic surgeons also treat patients who come in with injuries or health conditions related to their surgery (for example, infections or complications from anesthesia). The treatment can range from administering antibiotics or pain medications to physical therapy sessions on an outpatient basis (in which you will go home after your appointment rather than being kept overnight at the hospital) or even emergency surgery if necessary.
- Managing the clinic. A plastic surgeon typically oversees all aspects of running his/her practice—from hiring staff members like nurses and doctors’ assistants all the way down through scrubbing floors!”
