How Much do Government Doctors Earn in Namibia?

Namibia’s government doctors are paid a salary that is based on their grades. The general practitioner PayScale starts at Grade A5, with a minimum annual salary of N$1,223,251.78. This rises to a minimum annual salary of N$2,913,819.20 for Grade A11. Specialists will be paid according to their qualifications, experience and the urgency of their speciality in the country or region concerned.

Namibia’s government doctors are paid a salary that is based on their grades.

 Salaries are paid monthly in Namibia dollars.

The salary ranges from N$1,500 (approx. $160) per month for junior staff up to N$3,000 ($300) per month for senior staff. The starting salary will be higher if you have higher qualifications and more experience in medicine or surgery.

In Namibia, there are 11 grades of doctors. They are:

  • Grade 1: The lowest grade in the medical profession. This is a junior doctor or intern working towards becoming a medical inspector or assistant medical officer (A MO). The pay scale for this grade starts at N$13,000 per month and goes up to N$18,000 per month depending on years of service.
  • Grade 2: This is an A MO who has completed his internship and has been appointed by the Minister of Health to work in any hospital or clinic within Namibia as it may be required by him/her. The pay scale for this grade starts at N$18,000 per month and goes up to N$25,000 per month depending on years of service.
  • Grade 3: A post-graduate registrar (PGR) who uses his/her skills after completing an internship and acquiring experience as an A MO in government hospitals throughout Namibia before being promoted to this level either through open competition or through recommendation from colleagues working at a higher level like general practitioners (GPs), specialists etc..
