How Much is Property Tax in Namibia?

Property tax is a levy on the value of the real estate. It’s required by law and must be paid in order for your property to be registered or transferred. The amount that you pay depends on the municipality where your property is located; there are no national standards or regulations regarding how much property tax should be charged.

How much is property tax in Namibia?

Property tax is payable annually and is calculated based on the value of your property. The annual rate varies from municipality to municipality, but it’s typically less than 1% of the value.

You can pay your property taxes with your monthly municipal rates (which are due at the same time as your annual property tax), or you can elect to have them paid automatically every year by filling out a form at the municipal offices.

When is it due?

You’ll need to pay property tax in October. If you’re not sure how much you owe, or what to do if you can’t pay on time, contact your local municipality for more information.

If you don’t pay on time, interest will be added to your debt and may be collected through wage garnishments or other legal means.

If you don’t pay at all, your property may be sold, and the proceeds used to cover any outstanding amount owed by you.

Who is liable to pay property tax?

The following people are liable to pay property tax:

  • Individuals who own a home or land that is used for residential purposes in Namibia; and
  • Companies that own business premises in Namibia, which are used for business purposes.
