A colonoscopy is a procedure where a doctor inserts a flexible tube with a light and camera into the lower part of the large intestine to look for problems such as polyps, tumours, or other abnormalities.

A colonoscopy is designed to detect and diagnose these conditions by examining the inside of the bowel. It’s usually performed while the patient is under anaesthesia.

The procedure generally takes about an hour from start to finish. The patient has to be sedated for about 45 minutes before they are put under anaesthesia so that they can’t feel any pain during the process. A colonoscope is inserted through the anus into the rectum, sigmoid colon, and descending colon until it reaches a loop of small bowel that will then be examined with an endoscope (a long flexible tube with a light).
